Autosport Development’s Dane Moxlow and Mazda Pro Series Driver Gerardo Bonilla team up for South Carolina test

Kershaw, SC – Dane Moxlow and Gerardo Bonilla take two days to sort out the twin Pontiac GTO’s for the 2007 season of the SPEED World Challenge GT series at Carolina Motorsports Park with a trip to the Ohlins Shaker in between.


January 20th, the cars were dropped and prepped and took to an incredibly cold track.


“The track was so cold that we had to run a minimum of fifteen warm-up laps to get the engines up to temperature” said Moxlow, “the first few laps felt like driving on ice; these cars aren’t meant for winter temperatures.”




Aside from the cold, the Autosport team had to overcome a few small obstacles throughout the day. “We recently changed our alternator setup and had a few small issues with that,” said Crew Chief Chris Trapp, “other than that, sorting out our new engine mapping and setup were our main concerns.” Considering the team had a few setbacks, great data was collected with the Motec system and they retired for the day with a great baseline run under their belts.


Following the first test day, the Autosport transporter headed to Hendersonville, NC, the home of the Ohlins chassis shaker.


The Ohlin 7-post chassis shaker, is a $1 million dollar rig that simulates racing conditions, aerodynamic forces, and body-roll, even minor track imperfections.




The crew finished their 3-day stint of shaker testing exhausted. They completed 277 virtual race laps from data collected from several of the tracks to be run this coming season. One of their days included the changing of 38 different combinations of springs, and many shock and sway bar changes in order to optimize the GTO's performance on track.


Back on track at Carolina Motorsports Park, Moxlow and Bonilla took full advantage of the changes.


"Driving the Pontiac GTO after the shaker rig testing was like driving a brand new car.  Everything about the handling was cleaner, more precise.  The surprises over the bumps were reduced to mere mental notes.  The car's balance mid-corner to exit was better and the throttle easier to manage.  It's very impressive what a few days of testing on the shaker can do.  For a driver, its like a Christmas gift." said Gerardo.




Autosport will first field the Trenton Forging, and the DerondaUSA.com GTO’s at Sebring International Raceway, March 14-17th  for the first round of the series. Rookie, Dane Moxlow and the SPEED World Challenge veteran, Stu Hayner, will pilot the twin cars.

Seventh in points, a huge feat considering the team had no factory support from any major automotive manufacturers.
