Mazda Turbos in Utah

Powered by Mazda

Just over a week ago the B-K Motorsports factory BP Mazda LMP2 team visited the unique environments of Salt Lake City.  Technically in Tooele, Utah, the Larry H. Miller Utah Grand Prix took place at the relatively new Miller Motorsports Park.  The American LeMans Series chose to run MMP's "Outer Loop" configuration, a fun 3-mile version of the world class facility.  Our team had high hopes after a successful test just a few weeks prior.

However, our week was to be one of great challenge.  From the first practice forward, we found small gains in each department, while our competition in the Porsche and Acura camps continued to find larger gains.  In qualifying, they put in a torrid pace.  We were not going to let them push us around, and were able to put up our best laps of the weekend in qualifying as well, but would classify 9th in LMP2, 12th overall.  We actually started 6th in LMP2, 9th overall thanks to several LMP competitors losing their qualifying times due to minor infractions.

Ben Devlin started the race on our qualifying set of Yokohama tires.  He had a nice start with a good opportunity to move up, but was boxed in by other cars entering the first turn.  At the first caution period, Ben stopped in for fuel and fresh tires.  After a long burn, he reported he was feeling great in the car, so the team sent him off for another short stint.  It was soon my turn to take the final stint and finish the race.  Ben's time in the car featured several battles with our friends, but he mostly stayed out of trouble and helped us take care of our equipment.

During my stint to close the race, I wanted to see how hard I could push the tires, but with a different strategy.  Without going into too many details, I had a breakthrough race, learning to use the tires in a smarter way, finding even more speed than I thought was possible given the weather and track conditions.  The BP Lola Mazda is a dream to drive, and even more satisfying this time with the new learning.

We have a short break as some teams will travel to France for the 24 Hours of LeMans in June, the race that serves as the basis of the American LeMans Series.  We'll stay busy with preparations for our next race at Lime Rock Park in picturesque Lime Rock, Connecticut.  Skip Barber and his new membership club have invested heavily in the Lime Rock track, and are preparing a new track configuration for our race.  Stay tuned.

Many thanks to the crew and partners of B-K Motorsports, who have put in a tremendous effort in recent weeks.  Your efforts are sincerely appreciated.

Thanks to our fans who stopped by to say hello at Miller Motorsports Park.  We'll see you again soon!
